Residential Buildings at Rue de la Borde 12-22 bis
Two buildings from the 1960s were the objects of exemplary renovation performed here by the Lausanne architects of the Atelier Cube between 1989 and 1993. The renovation and adaptation of post-war buildings has constituted a major architectural challenge over the past 20 years. In the case of the Borde complex, originally built to minimum standards, the restoration included the creation of new housing and the enlargement of the existing ones. The value of it all has increased.
The size of the apartments in the very narrow rear building was increased by extensions to the front. The craftsmanship function of the front building was conserved. The building is crowned by a series of duplex housing units with a central walkway. Their living rooms face backwards, away from the urban context. Architecturally, they are contemporary and made of metal, and the work carried out on them is highlighted. The building received the Vaud Distinction of Architecture in 1989.
