The Centre car-park
The underground Centre car-park is located in the heart of Flon, a former warehouse district covering the base of the Flon Valley that has recently changed to accommodate service and leisure activities. Five levels deep, 4 of which are for parking, it has 640 places in total.
Built in 2001-2002 by the architects Ueli Brauen and Doris Wälchli, it is an example of a fruitful collaboration between architects and engineers.
Inside, the view of the space is improved by the concealment of technical elements and the lack of obstacles on the ground, resulting in visual and driving comfort.
The space has a single row of pillars whose profiles reflect the light, reducing covered areas to a minimum. The cylindrical ramps were also carefully designed. In the middle of one such ramp hangs an upside down tree, the work of artist Daniel Schlaepfer, evoking the loss of landmarks that is caused by the absence of daylight. The car-park received the Distinction romande d’Architecture award in 2006.
