Switzerland has twelve universities, two of which are situated in the Vaudois capital: the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Their system of study is structured in three cycles: bachelor, master, doctorate. They admit foreign students on the basis of their qualifications or ask them to take an entrance exam.

Founded in 1537, the University of Lausanne is composed of seven faculties and caters for more than 14'000 students and 2'700 researchers. The UNIL regularly features among the 200 leading universities in international rankings.
