News ans views from Florian Conz
The captain of LHC, Florian Conz, is back in Lausanne after spending four years defending the colours of Geneva-Servette in the LNA. Prior to his break in the city of Calvin, this native of Jura had spent four years in the Olympic city.
Let’s be clear from the start: Florian Conz is not a Lausannois born and bred. He is what we like to call an adopted Lausannois. And, in this case, the adoption went without a hitch. When the Jurassien left his native Ajoie and the village of Fontenay at the age of 18 and landed in Malley, the shock was not easy to take in. “I was all alone,” he relates. “I lived with Gerd Zenhäusern. It’s funny to meet up with him again in the team. (Editor’s note: the Valaisan is assistant to the trainer John van Boxmeer) I was content to have this new experience in my life, to discover life on my own. And my parents were happy to come and see me.”
“I could stay here all my life”
Vaudois number plates
Second-highest scorer in the club with fourteen goals in twelve matches, Florian Conz is a natural leader in the LHC dressing room. The four years spent playing at a higher level have enabled him to develop a welcome maturity at a time when the LHC is due to meet extremely fierce opponents in the spring. “I felt at ease straight away,” he confirms. “I was lucky to end up here in the first place, given the kind of things they say about towns in French-speaking Switzerland. But people have been particularly welcoming here, which made me feel at home immediately. The difference to Geneva? As Lausanne is a little bit smaller, I don’t feel as lost. It’s more of a family environment. There’s plenty of life here, without it being chaotic.” Married since last year, Florian Conz appreciates his life here: “The wedding was held in Lausanne and we have Vaudois number plates, which really takes the biscuit for someone from the Jura (laughter).”
Having experienced city-centre living, the captain of LHC moved to Préverenges, then to St. Prex, before returning to Mont-sur-Lausanne. “To get to Malley, I take the road that goes from the top of Lausanne near to La Blécherette as far as Prilly. When the weather’s nice, the view is absolutely stunning, you can see the lake and the mountains and I tell myself how lucky I am to be going to work. I also enjoy going to Sauvabelin or to the lake for a walk along the shore.”
While several of his team mates enjoy going for a drink at Le Darling in the Place St. François, the Jurassien does not have a regular haunt: “I quite like the Great Escape in Riponne, it’s got a relaxed atmosphere and it’s nice to watch a match. But I really like a change of scenery and to try out new places I’ve found by searching online. I enjoy the terraces in the Flon in summer, for example. It’s friendly and, because the town isn’t all that big, you often meet people you know.”
Adopted by the public a long time ago, Florian Conz has to accomplish only one thing to enter the hearts of the people of Lausanne forever: score the goal that wins the LNA for LHC.
