Located in the city centre, only a few steps from Rue Central, Place de la Palud is much appreciated by pedestrians and is a popular tourist attraction. A mechanical clock presents historical vignettes every hour; Wednesdays and Saturdays are market days. Behind the square, only 150 steps away, is the Notre Dame Cathedral, the largest gothic cathedral in Switzerland. Inside, there are gloomy crypts, disquieting gargoyles and stairwells not recommended for the claustrophobic. Climb up to the top for the view of the city, and, on the other side of the lake, of Evian, in France.
