After several months of reorganisation, Sauvabelin Safari Park has a new image: an observation route open to the public, a meadow and strips of shrubs demarcating the three enclosures, as well as reorganized or enlarged shelters.
From next weekend, members of the public will be able to discover all of the new indigenous species introduced into the park. The three woolly pigs which arrived last June and their 13 piglets will be joined by two Rhetic cows, five Roux du Valais sheep and four Booted Goats.
Let us remember that the objective of the reorganization project of Sauvabelin Safari Park (announcement 2003/37) is to encourage (younger) residents of the city to rediscover some of the lesser-known species of animal. Without wanting to recreate a mini zoo, the idea of this symbolic site held dear by the people of Lausanne is to remind visitors of the symbiosis which can exist between man and the domestic animal. A way of paying homage to our ancestors, who knew how to carefully select breeds of animal well adapted to the ecology of our country, and in so doing contribute to the preservation of a valuable genetic heritage.
The species were chosen in close consultation with Pro Specie Rara, the Swiss Foundation for the Evolution and Genetic Diversity of Vegetation and Animals.
