In this sixth notice dedicated to its sustainable development plan, the Municipality of Lausanne addresses the general topic of economy. Related to other notices, such as the planned construction of 3,000 housing units, it also introduces upcoming projects having to do with safety, cleanliness, city marketing, and employment in order to ensure Lausanne’s prosperity in the years to come. To ensure the City’s prosperity and to keep it attractive, the Municipality of Lausanne hopes to accomplish various projects. Over the next few years, 3,000 housing units, of which two-thirds will be available on the open market, will respond to the high demand. Some will have to be upscale housing, like those replacing the current administrative Beau-Séjour building by 2007, thereby attracting more wealthy residents. Following the introduction of the new m2 metro, much effort will also go into dealing with traffic and public transportation, including the installation of TL’s 08 network. The Lausanne-Morges area project will also make it possible to coordinate city planning with the rest of the region. In terms of safety, various measures are planned to improve public lighting and property surveillance. Finally, the development of green areas and the planting of trees within the city centre will be particularly increased in order to create a better quality of life. Over the next 10 to 15 years, Lausanne expects to have between 135,000 and 140,000 residents (compared with 127,000 today). Thanks to this new policy, the Municipality will also be able to continue to provide essential services for the people, particularly for the underprivileged, who tend to live near the city centre. Tourism and City MarketingA large number of conventions take place in Lausanne each year, thanks to its infrastructures, such as the Palais de Beaulieu, and the EPFL convention centre. In addition, it benefits from significant strengths, such as its history as an Olympic capital, the presence of prestigious, internationally known institutions of higher learning (IMD, EPFL, University, Catering college, etc.), its reputation for high levels of culture, and even its sustainable development policy. To make the most of these advantages, the Community of Lausanne will develop a city marketing strategy over the next few years, in partnership with Lausanne Tourism. Like the various steps to improve the quality of life and tourism within the city, Lausanne will not only continue its policy to assist new companies to become established, but it will also invest in activities involving youth and learning. |
