Education for a More Liveable World

For a long time, the City of Lausanne has developed its educational activity with young people in mind. Each year, the City offers a cultural program to all students in compulsory schooling. For sports, the "Sports Passion" program allows students in years 3 to 9 the opportunity to take part in a wide range of sports on Wednesday afternoons.
Lausanne also introduces young people to rural life by means of two educational farms, and they create awareness about protecting the environment and the climate by constructing solar panels in the schools.

Children’s Councils to Develop Citizenship

Children’s councils are aimed at developing children’s citizenship and their perspective toward the city environment. At the same time as it is putting forth proposals to improve school and neighbourhood life, it is confronted with the negotiation and political dimension of city life.
Children’s councils began at the secondary schools of Béthusy and Mon-Repos in 2001, then continued in the neighbourhoods of Eglantine, la Croix d'Ouchy, and Prélaz. They have carried out various projects: neighbourhood parties, the creation of games areas, the installation of football goals, etc.

Promoting Physical Activity in the Urban Environment

Sports are an excellent driver for personal motivation, health, and social and cultural exchange. This is why the City of Lausanne involved social workers to reinforce sports in the urban environment.
It is a matter of developing street sports in the neighbourhoods, supporting related associations, and creating a sports program for adolescents.

Healthy Diet Workshops

Many health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases and obesity, may be avoided by adopting a balanced diet.
For this reason, a weight management program has been in place since November 2004 for students in some primary and secondary institutions. It addresses overweight children while involving parents. Essential concepts having to do with nutritional balance and physical exercise are taught through group work.

City Art

Street art is pleasing to the eyes and to young people. A city art mobile workshop project was launched in the summer of 2005, and retained in 2006, to respond to the request from young painters and graffiti artists wishing to colour their city.
These street workshops offer young talent the ability to publicly express themselves, thanks to their artistic expression.

Environmental Education

An activities program, for children all the way from infant classes to the end of obligatory schooling, addresses the topics of waste sorting, buying decisions, and saving in terms of raw materials and the environmental consequences of "littering".
So that students follow through with sorting at school, school drop-off-centres have been installed within the walls of several establishments in Lausanne.
