Soon to be 25, Solange Bocquet is, frankly, not like other women. Although she works as an instructor at the police academy in Savatan and has been a professional boxer since the beginning of the year, the Lausannoise remains in touch with her feminine side.
“Once, during a fight, my nose was pushed against my cheek. My trainer put it straight in my corner of the ring.” Solange Bocquet mentions her war wounds in the matter-of-fact way of a single-minded athlete. Since the start of the year this 25-year-old Lausannoise has been boxing at professional level. What’s more, she won her first pro fight against the Thai boxing world champion, Fiona Hays, on 3 April in Palézieux.
This taste for fighting can be traced back to the end of her childhood: “I took up martial arts at the age of twelve, but I couldn’t find the right sport. It was only when I joined the police that I realised boxing was made for me, thanks to my instructor, Bertrand Fellay.”
«The uniform defines my role, whereas in the ring it’s just me, Solange.»
Not a part-time police officer
The police force is Solange Bocquet’s other world. As in the ring, the young Lausannoise must prove that she is worthy of her place. In a world where testosterone is often the best calling card, the young woman has had to prove that she has the physique to work as part of the police intervention unit. “Unfortunately, everything revolves around physique. They saw that I was up to it, that I was not a part-time police officer.” But Solange Bocquet is “pushing the boundaries” even further, as she teaches at the academy in Savatan. “I love my job. I give lessons in self-defence, baton tactics, shooting and intervention techniques.” Is that all?! Are the students irritated at being taught by a woman? “I have a class of twenty people aged between 19 and 42. There are some 'smart alecs' who think they know everything, that’s for sure. It’s usually the younger ones. The more experienced policemen are often more humble and will listen to any advice you can give them.”
Detour to Starbucks
Solange Bocquet makes some concessions to reconcile her professional life and her career as an elite athlete. “But not when it comes to working hours, because I don’t want to owe anybody anything, that could give the gossips something to talk about.” The Lausannoise is not the same person in uniform as she is in the ring. “The uniform defines my role, whereas in the ring it’s just me, Solange.”
Called into active duty in the city of Lausanne, this young woman is familiar with every nook and cranny of the Vaudois capital. “I enjoy going into residential areas. And patrolling the shores of the lake is something really special. I also like the centre and the old town, especially when it’s raining.”
To relax, Solange Bocquet knows of no better place than Starbucks in the Place St. François: “I adore the American look with the big comfy armchairs, and their coffees are delicious.” Another venue favoured by the young woman is the Brasserie des Sauges in the district of La Pontaise: “Their Chinese fondue is to die for.”
