University of Teacher Education, canton of Vaud (HEP Vaud)
Education elevated to the level of science
The HEP Vaud offers the full range of training services to the teaching professions. Situated at the heart of the tightly woven network of universities in the Lake Geneva region, into which it feeds and from which it benefits, the HEP Vaud is a leading player in research into educational science in Switzerland.
Within a general context marked by the increasingly complex nature of social relationships, the HEP Vaud prepares its students for the teaching professions and mentors them during their development. Against this background, it offers them good, solid training that combines both theory and practice, thus facilitating their integration into a professional environment.
The canton of Vaud has a very progressive policy when it comes to training and research. It is for this reason that numerous public and private institutions of international repute are based in Vaudois territory. The HEP Vaud, which belongs to the Swissuniversities network, is also developing strong links with partners at national and international level.
An emphasis on excellence applied to two major objectives
The HEP Vaud pursues two major objectives with excellence in mind:
- To provide university-level training for future teachers as well as postgraduate training for teachers and professionals working in the education sector
- To stimulate research and development in educational sciences, particularly within the framework of international research projects, and provide a set of teaching resources for professionals in schools
A comprehensive range of training courses
The HEP Vaud offers a wide selection of basic training, including: bachelor in preschool and primary education, master in secondary education I, diploma/MAS in secondary education II, master EPFL-HEP in mathematics for education, master in specialised education, master of advanced studies specialising in early years education, master in sciences and educational practices HEP/UNIL, master of advanced studies in didactics with French as a first language. Made in HEP
- Research: the laboratories of the HEP
The HEP Vaud works to develop centres of scientific excellence, most notably by setting up research laboratories. It now has four, including the International Laboratory for Research on Education with a View to Sustainable Development (Laboratoire international de recherche sur l'Education en vue du développement durable - LirEDD), inaugurated in 2013.
- Freinet event
Three events held in 2014 allowed all aspects of Freinet pedagogy to be analysed at the HEP Vaud. A colloquium, an exhibition and an exploration of teaching with actual classes provided an opportunity to get to the heart of the thought processes of a pedagogical genius who, even today, represents a valuable resource for teachers.
- Conferences: the difficulties of learning in mathematics
Two teacher trainers from the HEP Vaud have set up a cycle of conferences on the difficulties of learning in mathematics. The first conferences attracted a wide audience for two eminent personalities: Claire Meljac, a doctor in psychology in Paris, and Sybille Gonzalez-Monge, a neurologist in Lyons.
‘Conscious of the complexity of the art of teaching, the HEP Vaud offers the best possible training for existing and future teachers.’
