À ciel ouvert - Lausanne: interventions visuelles dans l’espace public

Contexte / Background

La façade pignon du bâtiment Manor constitue une surface particulièrement visible depuis plusieurs points de la ville, notamment depuis l’esplanade de la cathédrale, la place de la Riponne et les abords de la place Arlaud. Sa grande dimension et sa position dans le panorama urbain en font un espace à fort potentiel de valorisation culturelle.

Un dispositif d'accroche (câble et points de fixation) a été installé par la Ville pour permettre la pose de bâches imprimées couvrant l'ensemble de la façade. Un premier projet pilote, confié à l'artiste Maya Rochat, a été présenté à l’occasion de l'exposition de la Collection d'art de la Ville de Lausanne «De Bailly à Zaric. Collection d’art Ville de Lausanne» au Musée historique de Lausanne.

Fort de cette première expérience, le Service de la culture lance un appel à projets ouvert en vue de la commande d'une œuvre destinée à être présentée sur cette même façade pour une durée de deux à trois ans.

The gable façade of the Manor building is highly visible from several points across the city, notably from the Cathedral Esplanade, Place de la Riponne, and the surroundings of Place Arlaud. Its large scale and prominent position within the urban landscape make it a site with strong cultural potential.

A mounting system (cables and fixing points) has been installed by the City to enable the installation of printed banners covering the entire façade. A first pilot project, commissioned from artist Maya Rochat, was presented as part of the exhibition of the City of Lausanne Art Collection, From Bailly to Zaric: City of Lausanne Art Collection, at the Lausanne Historical Museum.

Building on this initial experience, the Department of Culture is launching an open call for projects for the commissioning of an artwork to be displayed on this same façade for a period of two to three years.

Objet de l’appel à projets / Purpose of the Call for Projects

Le projet d’habillage de cette façade s’inscrit dans un projet plus large d’activation culturelle des espaces urbains lausannois.

L’intervention a pour objectif de:

• Valoriser un espace urbain central et visible par une présence artistique de qualité;
• Offrir à une ou un artiste un support d’expression à grande échelle, depuis une position inédite dans la ville;
• Créer un dialogue entre la création contemporaine et le panorama urbain lausannois.

Le concept de l'œuvre est libre. Le mandant souligne toutefois que la dimension et la visibilité, notamment de loin, de ce projet sont exceptionnelles: l'intervention sera visible depuis plusieurs points élevés de la ville, ce qui impose une réflexion soignée sur l'échelle, la présence et l'intégration dans le paysage urbain.

En son état actuel, la façade porte atteinte au contexte patrimonial du centre historique de la Ville. L'intervention artistique doit contribuer à améliorer la qualité visuelle du panorama urbain et à le réinscrire harmonieusement dans son environnement bâti.

Le support est exclusivement une bâche microperforée imprimée (dont les dimensions sont les suivantes: 21,05 m. x 5,91 m.). Les propositions devront être pensées spécifiquement pour ce médium: le visuel doit être pensé pour une impression grand format en extérieur, résistant aux conditions climatiques, et produire un rendu de qualité à toutes les distances d'observation. Une approche purement décorative n'est pas recherchée; un projet portant une intention artistique affirmée, adapté aux contraintes et aux potentialités de ce support, est attendu.

This façade project forms part of a broader initiative aimed at activating Lausanne’s urban spaces through cultural interventions.

The intervention seeks to:

• Enhance a central and highly visible urban space through a high-quality artistic presence;
• Provide an artist with a large-scale platform for expression from a unique perspective within the city;
• Create a dialogue between contemporary artistic creation and Lausanne’s urban landscape.

The concept of the artwork is open. However, the commissioning body emphasizes that the scale and visibility of this project—particularly from a distance—are exceptional: the intervention will be visible from several elevated locations across the city, requiring careful consideration of scale, visual presence, and integration into the urban landscape.

In its current state, the façade negatively affects the heritage context of the city’s historic centre. The artistic intervention should contribute to improving the visual quality of the urban panorama and integrate harmoniously into the surrounding built environment.

The work must exclusively use a printed perforated mesh banner (dimensions: 21.05 m × 5.91 m). Proposals should therefore be specifically conceived for this medium: the visual must be designed for large-scale outdoor printing, withstand weather conditions, and maintain high visual quality at all viewing distances. A purely decorative approach is not sought; rather, a project with a strong artistic intention that responds to both the constraints and possibilities of this medium is expected.

Modalités de participation / Participation Conditions

Afin de disposer d’un panel de propositions, la Ville lance un appel à projets ouvert auprès des personnes professionnelles (selon les critères de Visarte Suisse) du domaine des arts visuels (arts plastiques, photographie, illustration, etc.) de Suisse ou actives en Suisse.

To ensure a broad range of proposals, the City is launching an open call for professional practitioners (according to Visarte Switzerland criteria) working in the field of visual arts (fine arts, photography, illustration, etc.) who are based in Switzerland or professionally active in Switzerland.

Dossier de candidature / Application File

Les personnes intéressées sont invitées soumettre leur candidature via le portail https://myculture.lausanne.ch, d’ici au lundi 31 août 2026.

La candidature comprendra:

• le formulaire de candidature en ligne dûment rempli;
• un bref CV artistique
• un portfolio (maximum 10 pages et maximum 20 Mo);
• une note d’intention (1 page A4 de texte maximum);
• entre une et trois propositions de visuels ou montages photographiques présentant le projet soumis (maximum 5 Mo)

Interested applicants are invited to submit their application through the portal:

Applications must be submitted by Monday, 31 August 2026.

The application must include:

• A completed online application form;
• A brief artistic CV;
• A portfolio (maximum 10 pages and 20 MB);
• A statement of intent (maximum one A4 page);
• Between one and three visual proposals or photographic mock-ups presenting the submitted project (maximum 5 MB).

Calendrier / Schedule

Honoraires et frais de production / Fees and Production Costs

L’artiste dont le projet est retenu bénéficiera d’un montant forfaitaire de CHF 12'000.– à titre d’honoraires pour ce projet.

Les frais de procédure, de production de la bâche (ainsi que d’un tirage unique d’un échantillon) et de pose seront pris en charge par la Ville de Lausanne.

The artist whose project is selected will receive a flat fee of CHF 12,000 as remuneration for this project.

Costs relating to the procedure, production of the banner (including a single sample print), and installation will be covered by the City of Lausanne.

Un jury constitué des personnes suivantes étudiera les candidatures et soumettra une proposition de classement à la Municipalité compétente pour statuer:

La Municipalité se réserve le droit de ne pas donner suite à la réalisation de l’œuvre si aucune des propositions soumises ne répond de manière satisfaisante aux attentes définies, ou dans l’hypothèse où des recours formés dans le cadre de la mise à l’enquête publique feraient obstacle à la réalisation du projet.

The Municipality reserves the right not to proceed with the realization of the artwork if none of the submitted proposals adequately meet the stated expectations, or if appeals arising during the public consultation process prevent implementation.

Critères d’évaluation / Evaluation Criteria

Les critères d’évaluation seront les suivants:

• Originalité et qualité artistique des projets;
• Adéquation avec le contexte, avec une attention particulière sur la bonne intégration de l’œuvre au tissu bâti;
• Impact visuel;
• Faisabilité technique et conformité avec les contraintes données.

Projects will be assessed according to the following criteria:

• Technical feasibility and compliance with the stated requirements.

Prix / Awards

Le jury procédera à un classement des projets après évaluation finale. En plus du projet sélectionné, des récompenses seront attribuées aux propositions arrivées en deuxième et troisième positions:

• 2^e prix: CHF 2'000.–
• 3^e prix: CHF 1'000.–

Following final evaluation, the jury will rank the projects. In addition to the selected project, prizes will be awarded to the second- and third-ranked proposals:

• Second Prize: CHF 2,000
• Third Prize: CHF 1,000

Contrat de mandat / Commission Agreement

Un contrat de mandat liera la Commune à la future ou au futur artiste. Celui-ci reprendra notamment les éléments indiqués dans le présent appel à projets.

A commissioning agreement will be concluded between the Municipality and the selected artist, incorporating the provisions outlined in this call for projects.

Droit d’auteur / Copyright

Les artistes sont les seuls titulaires des droits de propriété intellectuelle (droit d’auteur) sur leurs œuvres. Toutefois, ils et elles autorisent la réalisation et diffusion d’images de celle-ci à des fins de documentation et promotion sur tout support, imprimé ou numérique (site internet), à des fins de documentation et de promotion.

La Ville de Lausanne s’engage à mentionner le nom de l’artiste lors de toute diffusion spécifique de l’œuvre, sauf dispense de l’artiste.

Par ailleurs, les œuvres étant à caractère éphémère, il n'y aura aucune obligation pour la Ville de Lausanne d'exposition ou de conservation à son égard. Outre la suppression programmée, la Ville de Lausanne s’engage à ne procéder à aucune adaptation ou transformation de l’œuvre sans l’autorisation de l’artiste.

Artists retain full intellectual property rights (copyright) to their works. However, they authorize the production and dissemination of images of the artwork for documentation and promotional purposes across all media, including print and digital platforms.

The City of Lausanne undertakes to credit the artist whenever the artwork is specifically reproduced or communicated, unless otherwise requested by the artist.

As the works are intended to be temporary in nature, the City of Lausanne will have no obligation to preserve or continue exhibiting them. Aside from the planned removal of the work, the City also undertakes not to alter or modify the artwork without the artist’s consent.

Valorisation ultérieure du support / Subsequent Use of the Banner

À l’issue de son exposition sur la façade, la bâche pourra être réutilisée pour la création d’objets dérivés (sacs, accessoires ou tout autre objet), d’entente avec l’artiste. L’artiste sera consulté préalablement à toute décision quant aux modalités de cette valorisation et donnera son accord explicite par écrit.

Following its display on the façade, the banner may be repurposed for the creation of derivative products (bags, accessories, or other objects), in agreement with the artist.

The artist will be consulted prior to any decision regarding such reuse and must provide explicit written consent.
